The win over Sudbury gives Thurrock 1st XV an unassailable lead in League London Div.2N

Some info for "anoraks"  (with thanks to Ed Pugh)

Winning the nine league games just completed beats the best previous runs of 8.

These previous runs were:

21 October 1995 to 24 February1996

24 January 2009 to 4 April 2009

and 12 September 2009 to 14 November 2009.

However, the longest league run without defeat is 11 games between 23 September 1989 to 22 September 1990. The only blemish on an otherwise 100% record was a 0 - 0 draw against Eton Manor. The 1989 - 90 season was
completed without defeat, and the side won the first match of the following season to make it a total of 11.

We have received a message from Singapore!

Hi

This is Paul Stephens, better known as 'Soapy' in my Thurrock Playing days. I played at the club from u-13s through to 1997 (1st XV Captain in 1991/2) when I left the UK for overseas. I''ve been following the boys results this season and its good to see them going well and if my calculations are correct a win this Saturday v Sudbury would give them the League title with 4 games still to play which would be a great effort. I think I'm right in saying I played in the last 1st team to win promotion (1990/91) so its been far too long and I'd like to wish the boys luck for this weekend.

It will be doubly sweet for me if we make it as a couple of my mates out here in Asia are ex Sudbury and Braintree players (it’s a small world !)

Cheers
Paul

The game was in particular memory of Terry Davies, Glyn Barnet, Tony Meston, John White, Jim Hermitage and Barrie Lawrence who sadly have all passed on this summer. Each of these individuals have had a huge impact on the club as players, committee members and as supporters of Thurrock RFC.

All donations will be greatly received and put toward a memorial fund whereby we will be able to provide a fitting tribute to the industry, energy and memory of all concerned.

Jim and Colin are back!!!  The Quins men will be appearing at Thurrock on Tuesday 10th November 7.30-9pm

Now we all may think that we know everything there is to know about coaching Rugby , but I'd have a small wager that we don't, and that Jim and Chris can teach us a thing or two.

So how about getting yourself along to the next session and watching, learning and then passing it on to your respective teams.

These are two players that are playing at the top club level, surely they know more than we do ???????????

Oh .................. and its free to watch and open to all coaches at all levels.

Saturday Nov 14th is VP Lunch Day

Please book your places now as there will be a cap on numbers.

Thurrock Rugby Club held its first VP lunch if the season, which was well attended.  After the meal Craig Ribbons, ex Chairman of the Youth Section, handed over a cheque which was a donation from George the Shop, the late George Inwood.  During his 16 or more years as the shop proprietor in the club, George donated all his profits to the Mini and Junior Section of the club.  His generosity was rewarded by the Committee making him an Honorary Vice President.  Unfortunately he did not live to see his name on the Honours Board in the clubhouse, but his widow, Joyce, and many of his family attended the lunch on Saturday to see his final contribution handed over.  Also a guest was Neil Speight, representing Thames Gateway, who took the photo.  Craig Ribbons (left) hands the cheque to Jason Bedding, Youth Vice Chairman.

Sadly, the death has been announced of Terry Davies. TRFC sends condolences to his family and friends who will miss him badly.  His funeral has taken place   Donations in lieu of flowers are for TRFC, and can be given/sent to West & Coe who will be then forward them to TRFC.

Following the sad and tragic death of their young prop forward, Glen Daly, whilst on vacation this summer, Thurrock held a great Memorial Day on Saturday August 29th that will long be remembered in the best possible positive way that any such affair can be.  Attended by Glen’s close family, Glen’s friends celebrated his life in the best way they could think of, by playing rugby and raising money for Glen’s favourite charity, “Cleft Bridge the Gap”.

The day kicked off with a friendly match between Thurrock’s 3rd XV, “beefed” up considerably by a number of the Stanley family (all apparently with international experience of some description), and an invitation squad playing as TCS, Tilbury Container Services. TCS was where Glen worked and the Company gave great support in a providing set of shirts and a team of Glen’s colleagues, many of who had not played for a number of “weeks” (if ever). Led by Jimmy Ray, TCS gave an excellent account of themselves. Both teams constantly made changes because of the number of players all wanting to be part of the day and the crowd witnessed a stream of running rugby and tries that everybody enjoyed.

The “Glen Daly Marauders” then took to the field against Thames RFC in a pre-season match put together by the Thurrock 2nd Team skipper Damian Burns. The “Marauders” came onto the field resplendent in a magnificent blue and white strip rounded off with by pink cowboy hats, the cowboy hat being one of Glen’s favourite items of apparel, especially when on rugby tour. Made up from mainly the 2nd team squad from the last two years with some current first team players a few of Glen’s close friends, the game itself was secondary to the fact that so many of Glen’s friends wanted to be part of it.

Thames gave a good account of themselves particularly in the first half. Thames took the lead early on with a first half with a penalty. The Marauders then answered with a try wide on the right, followed by a second penalty from Thames, once again giving Thames the lead, 5-6. Before the break the Marauders came back with a second try, this time wide on the left scored by Det Leebumrung (the flanker found himself out of position and left with a short run to the line having run out of breath earlier in the move). The try was converted giving the Marauders a 12-6 half time lead. The only bad event of the first half was a serious injury to Dan Kemp who dislocated and broke his ankle in a tackle early on which will put him out probably for the rest of the season. To Dan’s credit he wanted to keep on playing despite the serious nature of the injury, “’cos I’ve still got one leg and I can hop”.

The second half was a different affair and the Marauders fitness and extra players began to take its toll on Thames . The Marauders scored a further six tries, Ricky Love in the centre scoring a couple, Sam Porter and Nat Farrell on the wings and James Flavin adding to the score. With conversions added by the excellent Aaron Burns the final score was 50-6 in favour of the Marauders. Of special note was the try scored in the closing minutes on the right wing by Blane Daly, not really as keen as his brother on rugby before Saturday, Blane dived over to the special delight of all his team-mates and friends. Blane also played in the first game of the day so will have suffered a few aches and pains on Sunday.

The matches were followed by a raffle and an auction for shirts donated by club members and rugby followers that helped raise thousands of pounds for the “Cleft Bridge the Gap” charity. A fitting tribute for a very special man.

Sadly there have been 2 more deaths in the club membership:

Tony Meston who was our press Officer last season and Jim Hermitage who died on Friday Sept 4th. Jim's funeral will take place on Thursday 17th September at 12.30.
Sutton Coldfield Crematorium,  Tamworth Road,  Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands. B75 5LG.

Our condolences go to both families.

We are sad to announce the death of George the Shop Inwood today August 24th.  A good servant to the club, especially the Minis and Juniors, he will be sadly missed by all.

The funeral took place on Friday Sept 4th at 11 a.m. at St Thomas's Church in Grays, followed by a short service at Corbetts Tay Crematorium at 12.40.  Mourners were invited to come back to the club house at about 1.30 p.m.

Saturday August 29th 2009

was a great success.  The Glen Daly Memorial Day raised more than £13,000 for Glen's favourite charity 'Cleft Bridge the Gap'. Everyone had a great day which went on well into the night.  Many thanks to all who attended and gave so freely of their time and money for a very worthy cause.

R.I.P.

We are very sorry to report the sudden death of Glyn Barnett, past 1st team player and past Chairman of the club. (July 27th)

His funeral was held on Wednesday 12th August at 1,20 p.m. at Pitsea Crematorium and then at the clubhouse.

The family have asked for only family flowers but donations can be made to The RNLI or St Luke's Hospice via West and Co, Funeral Directors.

The close season has seen the deaths of other members old and new:

Barrie Lawrence

Barrie was 85 and had been a member of the club since the 40s.  He'd played 1st team rugby with the likes of Brian Godden and Roy Kent. In recent years he'd attended many a VP lunch and loved talking over old times.  He was also a founding member of the Thames Barge Club and had been Commodore in his time.

Glen Daly

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the recent tragic death of Glen Daly in a motorcycle accident whilst on holiday. Glen was a hugely popular member of the squad and the club and will be missed dearly.

John White

Also John White, a first team player for many years in the "golden years". Many of the older members will remember him with affection. John died suddenly on the squash court.

Our thoughts are with all the families.

HAPPIER NEWS:
